A new study details just how common injuries are in the U.S. and how easily they could be prevented were states to implement more injury-prevention policies.

According to the report, "The Facts Hurt: A State-by-State Injury Prevention Policy Report," which was conducted by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Trust for America's Health, millions of injuries could be avoided each year if more state officials adopted and enforced policies that encouraged safety.

"There are proven, evidence-based strategies that can spare millions of Americans from injuries each year," said Jeff Levi, executive director of TFAH. "This report focuses on specific, scientifically supported steps we can take to make it easier for Americans to keep themselves and their families safer."

The study also pinpointed the states in which the highest number of deaths resulting from injuries occurred. New Mexico had the highest rate of injury-related deaths, while New Jersey had the lowest at 97.8 and 36.1 per 100,000 people, respectively.

Although injury-prevention and compliance rules can forestall injuries that occur in the workplace, businesses may want to consider securing a professional liability insurance policy. This can offset any court costs that result when employees sue companies for their injury-related expenses.
